In 4 steps
- Find the voice message. Open the Files app (or Files by Google) and go to
Android › media › com.whatsapp › WhatsApp › Media › WhatsApp Voice Notes. Voice messages are grouped in weekly folders and namedPTT-…-WA….opus. - Or share it. In WhatsApp, touch and hold the voice message, tap the share icon (or ⋮ › Share) and save it to Downloads or Google Drive.
- Open Vox2Text in Chrome. Tap the green box at the top, pick one or more voice messages and tap Transcribe.
- Copy or download the text. The language is detected automatically; when it’s done tap Copy text or Download .txt.
Where are the latest voice messages?
Inside WhatsApp Voice Notes, each subfolder is named after the year and week (for example 202642): the newest voice messages are in the folder with the highest number.
The first time is slower
On the first transcription the site downloads the speech recognition model (a few hundred MB), so Wi-Fi is best. It then stays saved in the browser and starts instantly next time.
Vox2Text or WhatsApp’s own transcripts?
WhatsApp can transcribe voice messages inside the app, if the feature is available for your language and phone. With Vox2Text the text is yours: copy it, download it as .txt, transcribe many voice messages at once, plus long recordings or languages WhatsApp doesn’t support.
Troubleshooting
- Use an up-to-date Chrome: it’s the fastest browser on Android.
- If you can’t see the Android › media folder, search for “WhatsApp Voice Notes” in the Files app.
- On a phone the limit is 1 hour of audio; for longer files use a computer (PC guide).
The voice message is transcribed on your phone and never uploaded to any server. Details in the privacy policy.
