In 4 steps
- Save the voice message to Files. In WhatsApp, touch and hold the voice message, tap Forward, then the share icon at the bottom right, and choose Save to Files.
- Open Vox2Text in Safari. Come back to this page and tap the green box Drop your voice messages here.
- Pick the file. Tap Browse, open the folder where you saved it and select the voice message (usually an
.opusfile). - Tap Transcribe. The language is detected automatically. When it’s done, tap Copy text or Download .txt.
Several voice messages at once
Save several voice messages in the same folder and select them all: Vox2Text transcribes them one after another and gives you a text for each.
The first time is slower
On the first transcription the site downloads the speech recognition model (a few hundred MB), so Wi-Fi is best. After that it stays saved in Safari and starts instantly.
Vox2Text or WhatsApp’s own transcripts?
WhatsApp can show voice message transcripts inside the app, if the feature is available for your language and phone. Vox2Text is for when you need the text outside WhatsApp:
- to paste it into an email or document, or download it as a
.txtfile; - to transcribe many voice messages at once, including old or forwarded ones;
- for long recordings or audio files that don’t come from WhatsApp;
- for languages WhatsApp doesn’t transcribe.
Troubleshooting
- You need iOS 18 or later with an up-to-date Safari.
- If the file won’t open, forward the voice message to yourself and save it again.
- On a phone the limit is 1 hour of audio; for longer files use a computer (see the long audio guide).
The voice message is transcribed on your iPhone and never uploaded to any server. Details in the privacy policy.
